Canadiennes beat Furies at home

Marie-Philip Poulin and Ann-Sophie Bettez padded their lead atop the Canadian Women’s Hockey League scoring table with a goal apiece as the Canadiennes defeated the Toronto Furies 4-1 on Saturday.

The win at Étienne Desmarteau Arena (the team’s former home), on ice named for Canadiennes coach Caroline Ouellette, wasn’t enough to put Montreal on top of the CWHL standings, as the Calgary Inferno humiliated the winless Worcester Blades 10-0 in Calgary — a game that counted for double points because their planned Saturday match was cancelled because of travel delays.

Kim Deschênes and Karell Emard also scored for Montreal against Toronto, while Natalie Spooner spoiled Emerance Maschmeyer’s shutout bid late in the third period. Maschmeyer stopped 25 of 26 shots, while Toronto’s Elaine Chuli had 28 saves.

Poulin leads the CWHL with 49 points in 24 games (23 goals, 26 assists), ahead of Bettez at 44 (17 goals, 27 assists). But Calgary remains atop the CWHL with 41 points, four ahead of Montreal. Montreal has a game in hand and will play the 0-23 Blades next weekend on the road. Montreal ends its season with games at Place Bell in Laval against the Markham Thunder on Feb. 23 and 24.
