Introducing the 1 in 10 Project
Supporting those who make travel great. View this email in your browser | Manage Newsletter Preferences January 10, 2021 This dreadful, interminable pandemic has hurt everyone, but as has been well established by now, it has hurt some of us more than others: essential workers, Black and brown communities, poor people. Another group that has felt the pain of the last year especially acutely is the 1 in 10 people worldwide who work in jobs connected directly or indirectly with tourism, according to data from the World Travel & Tourism Council.
Some have had their plights well publicized, like restaurant workers and flight attendants. Others have gotten less attention, like the amazing travel specialists who are so indispensable to the coverage we bring you across all of Condé Nast Traveler's platforms. And then there are the concierges and the taxi drivers, the bush guides and the sommeliers, the baggage handlers and the housekeepers, all of whom play a role in every trip we take, often in invisible ways. Without them it would be nigh impossible to go anywhere or do anything, but they're also the key to why we love to travel. When we think back on what made a journey great, it is so often because of their kindness, their wisdom, and their good humor.
These folks' lives and livelihoods have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19, as they so often are by crises that affect travel and the global economy. Even with vaccination programs underway and a glimmer of hope on the horizon, for many of them it will still be a long time before they get to experience anything like normalcy again. We know that you, our readers, increasingly make travel decisions based on how and where you can have a positive impact. Traveler's just-launched 1 in 10 Project is conceived in that spirit, with the goal of sharing stories from the amazing people who work in travel, passing along their recommendations about what to see and do, sharing their insights, their passions, their jokes. We will be adding to it every month with first-person accounts of what it is like to do certain jobs in the travel industry and how people in the business spend their time when they're not working, plus guided video tours and more.
We hope the spirit of this project impacts the travel decisions you make this year (following, of course, CDC recommendations and local guidelines). Consider it not only an action plan, but also a call to support all those who make travel great. Yours in travel, Jesse Ashlock U.S. Editor
