A global study has found that the vaccine made by Johnson & Johnson is 66% effective in preventing moderate to severe COVID-19. The vaccine did better at preventing disease in the U.S. – 72% — than in South Africa, where a variant is spreading. These results are troubling because the South African variant has now been detected in this country. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi took aim Thursday at GOP leadership, saying they had ignored a wave of threats and comments by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., and placed her on the House Education Committee despite her questioning of school shootings. Greene is a promoter of QAnon and other conspiracy theories.  A liquid nitrogen leak at a poultry plant northeast of Atlanta killed six workers and injured 11 more on Thursday. At least three of the people hospitalized are in critical condition.  Newsletter continues after sponsor message In Memoriam  Dennis Oulds/Getty Images Trailblazing actress Cicely Tyson died Thursday at age 96. In a career that spanned some 65 years, Tyson was an elegant, dignified presence on stage and screen. She commanded attention in such movies as Sounder and The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, and she won three Emmys, a Tony Award and an honorary Oscar. She also inspired generations of Black actors who grew up watching her.
