China’s e-commerce milestone: What you need to know
China is set to become the first country in history that will see a majority of its retail sales conducted online instead of via traditional brick-and-mortar stores.
According to a forecast from eMarketer, 52.1% of all retail sales in China will be conducted online by the end of 2021. For comparison, only 15% of U.S. sales are online, the report says.
Social commerce on WeChat, along with “live commerce” on platforms like Douyin (what TikTok is called in China), helped drive the trend.
South Korea, the U.K., Denmark, and Norway rounded out the five countries with the highest percentage of e-commerce sales.
