A holiday offer from NR
Dear NR Friend,
Religion is essential. Bill Buckley was always clear about that, and I'm grateful National Review always has been, too.
And yet, we are seeing something very different in the modern, mainstream culture. At the height of the coronavirus pandemic, churches, synagogues, and mosques were shuttered. The mayor of New York threatened believers who dared to find a way to worship and grieve and gather. And the rules were arbitrary as spaces reopened.
This wokeism — informed by a secular liberal academy and culture — is a new religion. People now find meaning in canceling, outrage, and "virtue signaling." The young, in horrifying numbers, today consider suicide because they lack the context in which to realize their worth. And with no rich sense of history, they have no connection to the Abrahamic faiths that have been a gift to humanity and civilizations.
We need Judeo-Christian values for pluralism to work. Is it any surprise that it's not working right now?
Thanks be to God for this time of year. I'm so glad my elder brothers and sisters in faith could be in synagogue for Passover. I waited a year to go to Palm Sunday Mass. I long to be in church for the Triduum this year – Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil. Holy Saturday is always a solemn day – the harrowing of hell and all. (A belief that hell is real could sure explain a lot these days.) And we certainly do need to arise from the darkness.
I'm writing you not only to share these thoughts, but to make an important related point: National Review today is as steadfast in its defense of Judeo-Christian values as it was at its founding 65 years ago. And I want you to be part of it, with access to all of our work, by becoming a member. Non-members do not see all the writing on our website, which includes each new issue of the magazine and so much more. Instead, they get a few articles before hitting the paywall – a necessity that helps keep us in business.
Why not change that?
In gratitude for this time of year and its essential nature, we have a special offer for all our readers: Sign up for an NRPLUS membership right now and receive a full 60% off our regular rate.
An NRPLUS membership means no paywalls and a reading environment with barely any ads. But it's much more than that. You will be able to comment on articles and blog posts and join our private Facebook group. (I occasionally pop into the group to interact with our readers.) You can also join exclusive calls with political thought leaders (like Tom Cotton, Ben Shapiro, and Dan Crenshaw, to name just a few).
Join us, a community that stands counter to wokeism and embraces the values that are indispensable for humankind.
Oh, and feel free to email me anytime (klopez@nationalreview.com). I'd love to hear from you.
God bless you!
Kathryn Jean Lopez Editor-at-Large, National Review
