House of the Week: A modern update for an architect's 1940s workers cottage

Architect Sarah Foletta was looking for a project and this house in Sydney's eastern suburbs was exactly that.
With the previous owners simply moving from room to room away from dodgy renovations, addressing the trail of failed improvements to the home was not a task for the uninitiated. Sarah and her husband Hamish could see the potential of the house for their family and set about making their own mark on it. "We knew the house was right for us," says Sarah.
Stripping out extraneous walls, then white-washing what was left (including a beautiful old fireplace) created a light and airy backdrop for living and a blank canvas to display the family's collection of eclectic pieces - many carved from textured timbers.
