View this email online by Korva Coleman and Suzanne Nuyen First up Anna Moneymaker/Getty Images Here's what we're following today: Results are coming in after several key states' elections:  ➡️ Republican Glenn Youngkin won Virginia’s gubernatorial election, dealing Democrats and rival candidate Terry McAuliffe a blow. Democrats have held the governor’s mansion for years.  ➡️ The governor’s race in New Jersey remains too close to call, with Democratic incumbent Phil Murphy neck and neck with  his Republican challenger, state Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli.  ➡️ Michelle Wu won Boston’s mayoral election, becoming the first woman and first person of color to be elected to that office in a city fraught with racial tensions.  ➡️ New York City voters picked Democrat Eric Adams as their new mayor over Republican Curtis Sliwa, in a race marked by name-calling and insults. Adams will become New York’s second Black mayor.  ➡️ In Minneapolis, voters have solidly rejected a proposal to eliminate the city’s police department and replace it with a new Department of Public Safety.  Here's why the night is a bad omen for Democrats ahead of next year's midterms, plus four more takeaways from the election.   Key advisers to the CDC are recommending Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 5 to 11, saying the data they reviewed show it’s safe and 90.7% effective. Shots for younger kids can begin now, although it may be a few days before the vaccines are more widely available.  Facebook will delete its facial recognition software for users after years of complaints by privacy activists. The company says the technology doesn’t work evenly across boundaries of race, gender and age. It will delete the faceprints of more than 1 billion people. Facebook is a financial supporter of NPR. The Atlanta Braves are the 2021 World Series champions. Fourteen-year-old Akilan Sankara won a prestigious prize after he designed a program that can make everyday online tasks run more efficiently. The young mathematician built a program that calculates antiprime numbers, which have more than 1,000 digits, and discovered a new class of functions to analyze these highly divisible numbers.  In a victory for beach handball players and the Norwegian women’s Olympic team, female players won’t have to wear bikini bottoms when they compete anymore.
