My Husband Helped Care for Afghanistan Children During the U.S. Evacuation
 
Unlike his last deployment, Ben has his phone this time. We text and talk at least once a day. He tells me the news before I hear it on the radio. One day in late August he tells me the Afghan people are throwing babies over the wall of the Kabul airport in the hopes they'll be safer.

He tells me of the little boy, three, who weighed less than our one year old. Malnourished and blind, all his teeth had fallen out. The parents handed him over the wall and ran. The paratrooper who caught him thought he was dead. "I'm not trained for this," my husband says, his voice cracking. "None of us are."
