A German court convicted a Syrian ex-officer of crimes against humanity, a watershed moment for those seeking justice for Syrian war atrocities.

The former officer, Anwar Raslan, was accused of overseeing a detention center where prosecutors said at least 4,000 people were tortured and nearly 60 killed. He was sentenced to life in prison.
