April 27 In Meme History
April 27th is a day that will go down in meme infamy, as it’s notable for all the wrong reasons. First, it’s the day in which an unfortunate Newgrounds user found themselves the center of attention in an early Photoshop trolling thread, becoming “Dick Neck” forever after. Years later, it’s also the day associated with an act of terrorism in the form of Islamic State jihadist video clips being released, thus creating the meme “Abu Hajaar” as a joke against terrorism. Most recently, however, today was an act of socialite terrorism with the infamous Fyre Festival, an event so catastrophically bad that it’s received more than two adaptations by large streaming networks since. | | Fyre Festival was meant to be a luxurious music festival set to take place on a private island in the Bahamas. However, due to poor planning, many performers backed out and attendees who had arrived early were left stranded with little food and shelter, essentially creating a disaster zone in which fights and looting broke out over resources. The final result of the Fyre Festival was multiple investigations, arrests, a lawsuit and two documentaries made by Netflix and Hulu — not to mention plenty of choice memes. Read more. | | Abu Hajaar is the jihadist name of an Islamic State militant repeatedly heard in an unedited video clip of a deadly skirmish between a group of ISIS fighters and Kurdish troops that was captured on a headcam by one of the jihadists and later released by VICE News in 2016. After the video went viral on Western social media, many viewers began referencing the name as a way to poke fun at the incompetency of ISIS combatants on the battlefield, forever cementing Abu Hajaar in meme history. Read more. | | | Dick Neck is a nickname that was given to a Newgrounds user after he posted a photo of himself on the forums way back in 2009. Within mere days, it evolved into a Photoshop meme where either the man’s face is swapped out or his neck is elongated similarly to Longcat. The thread was created by DrForeman as a way to show off his body and his exercise routine, but it quickly spiraled into a humorous trolling thread as users began to ridicule him.
