Evacuations in Mariupol continue, Philadelphia's gun violence is a daily crisis, and the Kardashians win the case against Blac Chyna
THE BIG STORY
A leaked draft opinion shows what it could look like if the Supreme Court strikes down Roe v. Wade |
A leaked draft opinion shows that Justice Samuel Alito and other members of the US Supreme Court's conservative majority are seriously considering overruling landmark decisions that have protected a person's right to an abortion for decades, and could be poised to do so in the next two months. The bombshell report from Politico featured a 98-page document that appears to be the first draft of an opinion that would overrule both Roe v. Wade — the 1973 decision that recognized a constitutional right to abortion — and Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pa. v. Casey — a 1992 decision that upheld the core of Roe while also revising the standards that federal courts rely on to decide if state restrictions on abortion are lawful. The court has already heard arguments for Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, a case where the state of Mississippi seeks to uphold its 15-week abortion ban. If the draft opinion becomes reality — or if the court upholds the Mississippi law in a narrower way that weakens Roe and Casey — access to abortion services and reproductive health care will continue to shrink in some parts of the country. The court does not announce when it will release an opinion in a given case, but the term is expected to end by early July.

- A US diplomat said Russia will likely stage "sham" elections in parts of eastern Ukraine to officially gain control of the area. The New York Times reported that diplomat Michael Carpenter cited "highly credible" reports, but did not provide more specific sources of information.

Here's what absolutely everyone wore to the 2022 Met Gala. The theme was: "In America: An Anthology of Fashion." Shoutout to Jessie Buckley's hat. An arrest warrant has been issued for the corrections officer who went missing with a murder suspect. Law enforcement officials initially said they were exploring whether the officer was assisting the inmate or whether she was kidnapped en route to the courthouse. The Kardashians are not to blame for the demise of Blac Chyna's reality TV show with Rob, a jury found. The Kardashians' attorney said the family, who was at the Met Gala in New York when the verdict was announced, was "very pleased." A former New York cop was found guilty of assaulting a police officer at the Capitol on Jan. 6. The guilty verdict will likely give pause to other defendants considering a similar strategy of claiming self-defense.

AFTER THE SHOOTING One bullet can kill, but it takes more than 100 people to save a gunshot victim's life |
Just a few of the people involved in saving a gunshot victim's life. Take a look at the full array of photos here. James Sprankle for BuzzFeed News |
From the time they are shot until they are fully recovered, a gunshot victim may encounter over a hundred people working to protect their health — including police officers, security guards, trauma nurses, doctors, surgeons, therapists, social workers, pharmacists, and paramedics — as part of the vast but largely hidden economic cost of gun violence. In 2020, 45,000 people died from gun-related injuries in the US — the highest mark on record, a 14% increase from the year before, a 25% increase from 2015, and a 43% increase from 2010, according to the CDC. In Philadelphia, there were 562 homicides in 2021, equating to a homicide in the city every 16 hours. And even after a patient leaves the ICU, both the gunshot victim and the support network built around them continue to grapple with emotional and psychological damages. "How do I, as the trauma surgeon, guide families in terms of how they process the fact that someone has just tried to harm them or their family member?" Niels Martin, a trauma surgeon at Penn Presbyterian, said. "Having to tell a mother that her son is dead is horrible. It's probably the most horrible thing that I have to do. And it's sad how many times I have to do that." |
