Brisbane's IMA is presenting REBIRTH IS NECESSARY by Jenn Nkiru from tonight until July 9 in the first Australian solo show for the Nigerian-British artist, director and frequent Beyoncé collaborator. An audio-visual odyssey that collapses and reorders time to explore "the magic and dynamism of Blackness in a realm where time and space are altered", the visceral video work draws on the history of experimental film, music, Afro-Surrealism and the varied cinematic traditions of the Black diaspora, interweaving dreamlike portraits with archival footage and a soundscape featuring James Baldwin and Sun Ra.
An ultra-stylish concept gallery from jewellery designer Jeanne Kang and tailor Joe Ha of bespoke suiting label The Finery Company, Fineworks Paddington is set within the creative couple's Sydney atelier and exhibits an eclectic and ever-evolving collection of mid- and late-20th century furniture, ceramics, decorative art, fine teas and bonsai alongside menswear and jewellery. Furnished in a dapper fashion with pieces from the likes of Charles Rennie Mackintosh – one of Joe's favourite designers – the elegant terrace also plays host to regular events and exhibitions, including a series of moon jars by Kim Woochang.
Head to Byron Bay bar and restaurant Barrio to experience the woodfired creations of Argentinian chef Santiago Socrate, whose penchant for pared-back cooking methods produces fabulous fare that is anything but basic. From his signature cured kingfish with pickled cucumbers and pink peppercorns to grilled baby octopus with pickled carrot purée, chorizo XO and Spanish sobrasada, the menu is ever evolving but grounded in the unique flavours produced by the venue's woodfire oven, open-flame grill and in-house smoking, pickling and curing.
Whether you're out celebrating or simply unwinding al chiuso, a pop of Bandini Prosecco will add some pep to the occasion. Peach and green apple notes with hints of acacia and wisteria imbue this Italian-made, lightly sparkling wine with elegance and a pleasing sense of balance. Accompanied in the Bandini collection by a beautiful sparkling rosé, the drop pairs perfectly with a light fish carpaccio and a mood of conviviality.
A connection with nature – and water in particular – is on many home owners' wish lists. For such people this book is a gift, filled with magnificent properties from Sweden to Canada, and including several in Australia such as a dramatic home at Otago Bay in Tasmania and a spectacular headland-hugging house in NSW. All revel in their proximity to oceans, rivers, lakes and bays and the site-specific contemporary designs are awe inspiring.
