THE BIG STORY
The Senate failed to codify abortion rights. Here's where things stand. |

What happened on Wednesday in the Senate? Despite controlling the Senate, the House of Representatives, and the White House, Democrats did not have the votes to codify the right to an abortion. As expected, the Senate voted 51-49 against the Women's Health Protection Act. The bill would have struck down six-week and 20-week abortion bans, as well as other state-level provisions such as waiting periods and mandatory ultrasounds. What happened before this vote? The doomed vote was in response to a leaked Supreme Court draft ruling that would overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 ruling that declared abortion access was a constitutional right. The underlying case, Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, concerns a Mississippi law that bans nearly all abortions in the state after 15 weeks of pregnancy. At this time, the leaked draft is not final and abortion is still legal in the US, although the amount of access and extent of restrictions varies by state. What happens now? The court could go with the drastic option outlined in the draft opinion, leaving it up to each state to decide if they want to ban abortions. Alternatively, the court could leave Roe in place, but uphold Mississippi's argument that the state can ban abortions before a fetus is viable (able to survive outside the womb, usually around 24 weeks of pregnancy). And finally, it's possible but unlikely that the court could rule against Mississippi and leave Roe as is after this ruling. |
STAYING ON TOP OF THIS Finland moves to join NATO in a historic break from neutrality |
- Finland's prime minister and president announced their support of the country joining NATO "without delay," AP News reports. Finland has historically chosen a stance of neutrality, and joining NATO's military alliance would be a pivotal change for the country's national security policy. Sweden, another neutral country in close proximity to Russia, is also expected to apply to NATO soon.
- Need a refresher on NATO? The defense alliance organized after World War II includes 30 countries total and assures that if one member country is attacked, the others will come to that member's aid. Read this stellar rundown by New York Times reporter Jesus Jiménez for a more detailed overview.

The far-right troll known as "Baked Alaska" torched his own Jan. 6 plea hearing almost immediately after it began by proclaiming his innocence. Anthime Gionet, who livestreamed inside the US Capitol during the insurrection, had been set to plead guilty to one of the lowest-level charges brought in connection with Jan. 6. The alleged victim confronted the comedian and actor about the attack inside a trailer, recorded the encounter, and posted it on YouTube. Sophie Turner revealed she'll "probably exhibit some signs of trauma" in the future after filming "heavy" Game of Thrones scenes as a child star. Turner was part of the most controversial scene in the show's history, and admitted to implementing coping mechanisms during filming.

HOW FENTANYL REACHES CASUAL DRUG USERS 2021 marks a new, tragic record for drug overdoses in the US |
Overdose deaths in the US sharply worsened again during the pandemic, killing more than 107,000 people last year, according to preliminary CDC estimates. "We are in an overdose epidemic that has been getting worse for 22 years, and is so bad that it has cut US life expectancy, even before the pandemic, which is incredible. We've never seen anything like this before in history," said medical anthropologist Dan Ciccarone of the University of California, San Francisco. The latest wave of deaths appears driven by increased supplies of the dangerous opioid fentanyl into the illicit drug market, along with more people overdosing alone while isolating during the pandemic. Most worrisome, fentanyl is thought to be reaching more casual drug users through counterfeit pain pills and in combination with cocaine and other drugs (although not cannabis, at least so far). Overdose deaths in the US have been on the rise for over two decades, but getting into effective treatment programs also remains difficult for many people. About 1 in 5 people who want drug treatment can't afford it, even if they can find a good program, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. |
"YOUNG HARLEEZY" (SIGH) Jack Harlow wants to be great. But he doesn't have anything to say. |

Jack Harlow is inevitable, writes Elamin Abdelmahmoud. At this point, there is nothing you or I can do to stop him. I do not say this with malice or discontent — it is as factual as the weather. In countless interview videos, Harlow is relaxed and charismatic. On talk shows and IG Lives and onstage, his easy and mischievous demeanor makes him immediately magnetic. It's hard not to be won over by him. And the internet is responding to the pull — the hunger for Harlow seemingly can't be tamed. It's a shame, then, that the boundless charisma and magnetism are only haphazardly present on his sophomore record. Come Home the Kids Miss You is a self-serious and generic offering, filled with excellent delivery, expensive beats, and killer flows all marshaled in the service of having little to say. His technique may be competent, his skill is undeniable, but Harlow's point of view is nowhere to be found.
