Chief Justice John Roberts announced an investigation into the leak, Oklahoma enacted a six-week abortion ban, and people are tired of the Met Gala
THE BIG STORY
How have state and federal lawmakers reacted to the leaked Supreme Court opinion draft striking down Roe v. Wade? |

Chief Justice John Roberts confirmed the authenticity of the draft opinion and ordered an investigation into the leak. Also, Republicans leaders are outraged at the leak, but are largely avoiding the topic of abortion. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer vowed to bring a bill codifying abortion access as a right nationwide for a floor vote. However, it's unlikely that a law like this would ever come to pass in Congress. While such a bill could potentially pass the House, it is currently doomed in the Senate, which is infamously designed for obstructing and killing legislation. Oklahoma has banned abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy. Introduced in January of this year, SB 1503 is one in a series of bills being weighed in conservative-leaning legislatures across the country. Previously, Oklahoma had become a destination for Texas residents unable to get an abortion in their own state.

STAYING ON TOP OF THIS How have people on the ground reacted to the leak? |
Abortion providers and advocates have been preparing for this moment for years. Now, they're jumping into action. For example, North Dakota's only abortion provider, the Red River Women's Clinic, has been considering moving across state borders to Moorhead, Minnesota. If Roe is overturned, Minnesota is one of the only states in the Midwest where abortion would remain legal. Donations and support are surging to pro–abortion rights groups. Abortion providers and advocates who spoke to BuzzFeed News emphasized how crucial abortion funds are in this moment. "They are really making it happen for folks who have to travel out of state who have to now account for flights, gas mileage, childcare, as they have to access abortions further and further," said one abortion advocate. What the leaked draft has not changed: Abortion is still currently legal in the US (although many states have been passing more aggressive restrictions), since the leaked draft has not been handed down as an official opinion.

SNAPSHOTS OF THE WAR IN UKRAINE |
- The EU has proposed banning all Russian oil imports. The plan also includes sanctions on Russia's biggest bank, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, and more Russian broadcasters, according to the New York Times.
- The CIA published guidelines on how Russians can act as informants without being caught by the Kremlin, the Washington Post reports. This comes as Russian civilians attempt to navigate around their country's severe internet restrictions and find independent news reports about the war.

MEANWHILE, AT THE MET The Met Gala and SCOTUS leak happened on the same night, and the irony was too rich | On the first Monday in May, people all over the world flocked to their laptops and phones, donning their finest sweatpants to log onto Twitter and freely judge celebrities at the world's most exclusive costume party. But for those tuned in online, writes Steffi Cao, social media timelines quickly devolved into a mess of sparkling evening gowns and alarming political news. Many were quick to point out the irony of this year's Met Gala theme, "gilded glamour," which was intended to celebrate the history of American fashion — particularly the Gilded Age of 1870 to 1900, marked by industrialization and a dramatically ballooning gap between the rich and poor (sound familiar?). |
