Over the weekend, the World Health Organization declared monkeypox a public health emergency of international concern. In a month's time, the disease has spread to at least 75 countries that have reported more than 16,000 cases, and has caused five deaths. The US has seen surging monkeypox cases since the first confirmed case in May, with more than 2,800 cases across 46 states. The declaration makes monkeypox, polio, and COVID-19 the three ongoing public health emergencies facing the world. Communication over what monkeypox is has been overwhelming and confusing, particularly as initial cases have been largely among men who have sex with men. However, WHO's Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus emphasized in a statement that "stigma and discrimination can be as dangerous as any virus," and that there was a "clear risk of further international spread" beyond the current affected communities. |

- Russian missiles struck a port in Odessa, Ukraine. No one was killed or injured, but Ukrainian authorities called the attack a blatant undermining of the terms of the newly approved grain deal, the Washington Post reports.
- The US will send $270 million in military funding to Ukraine. According to AP, the Biden administration has sent a total of $40 billion in economic and security aid to Ukraine since war first broke out in February.

Steve Bannon was found guilty on two counts of contempt of Congress. Bannon, a top adviser to former president Donald Trump, refused to comply with a subpoena to testify and provide documents to the Jan. 6 committee. A 9-year-old boy is the sole survivor of a shooting attack on his family during a camping trip. Investigators do not know what prompted this seemingly random attack. The shooting suspect was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Drake has sparked backlash after he posted a "creepy" photo he'd taken of a woman he doesn't know sitting in a restaurant. This is far from the first time that Drake has been called out for problematic behavior.

Inmate Miriah Vanlith recently went viral for a TikTok asking people to write to her at the South Idaho Correctional Institution, according to the Idaho Statesman newspaper. Vanlith, 43, was convicted in 2019 of raping two teenage boys, enticing children over the internet, and distributing a controlled substance to a minor. She raped one 14-year-old boy in 2018 while out on bond for having sexually abused a 15-year-old boy and raping a 17-year-old boy the year before. Prison records show she won't be eligible for parole until 2028. Prisoners don't have standard access to the internet, but using a for-profit communications platform called JPay, Vanlith was able to send a video message to someone on the outside, who then posted to TikTok on her behalf. #PrisonTok can be a source for good, whether by shining light on inhumane conditions or by simply engaging a curious public with the realities of the criminal justice system. In fact, it's not uncommon for videos to be shared to TikTok featuring incarcerated people asking for pen pals.
But Vanlith's videos mainly caught attention from people who were shocked that a prisoner could appear in a TikTok video or disgusted that a convicted sex offender could go viral. Her video blew up and her account soon had more than 33,000 followers — but has since been shut down for unconfirmed reasons.
