Happy Wednesday, friends! We're full-on in the dog days of summer, which sadly means that it's really hot and not that we get to play with dogs. But nevertheless, we're still pushing on here at WIRED Games, and it's been a pretty busy one for us too. This week sees the launch of Stray, where you literally play as a cat, and truly, that's enough for me. Also on the docket for me this week is Escape Academy, which I'm in love with and is probably the only escape-room-style game that I've genuinely enjoyed. If you're looking for something new to play, give those a look! But now, let's get down to business. First up this week, check out Megan Farokhmanesh on why we both love and hate playing our own high school years in games. She starts off by discussing Demonschool, a recently announced game from Necrosoft Games, as well as Sims 4: High School Years. My high school years were pretty awkward, so I don't know if I particularly love the idea of revisiting them in a video game, but surely some people do, right? Next, have you heard that Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is free to play now? You know, that game with the adorable beans running a ridiculous obstacle course that dominated our lives early on during the pandemic? Yup, it's back, and if you and your friends are picking it up again, we've updated our list of tips to help you snag that glorious crown. Don't thank us now, thank us after you get that W, okay? In her Casual Gamer column this week, Swapna Krishna explains how she accidentally broke her doomscrolling habit—with video games! Specifically mobile games. And there's no shame in mobile games; she and I will both shout that from the rooftops. In fact, I've been playing a browser game lately that's been competing with Fate: Grand Order for my mobile time (and my battery) … but I digress. Swapna, for her part, is still in love with Merge Mansion, and the longer she plays it, the more I'm thinking about trying it out. Have you ever heard of the band Horse Jumper of Love? If so, you have more fingers on the pulse of music than I do, but when this incredible story by Amos Barshad crossed my desk, I perked up: The band loves video game music and uses it as inspiration. To that point, they've recorded arguably the best Legend of Zelda song we've heard in a long, long time, and you should listen to it. Check out the full story, then give it some time in your headphones and let us know what you think. Meanwhile, Amit Katwala has an excellent look at F1 22, this year's entry to the F1 series of racing games. Amit explains that while the game is probably the most accurate and faithful way to drive an F1 racer in a video game to date, it also falls prey to the usual tropes of a game series that needs to re-invent—and commercialize—itself year after year. Finally, it may be mid-July, but that doesn't mean we're not looking at the best new additions to Xbox Game Pass, as we do every month. Reece Rogers has a great rundown of the best additions for the month of July, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge (which is so much fun I can barely stand it) and Outriders, which just launched its new Worldslayer expansion (this isn't included in Game Pass, but the base game is, so you can try it out for free before deciding to pick up the expansion pack.) There are tons of others in there too, if you're looking for more options. We have plenty more over at WIRED Games, as well, if none of these whet your appetite. Of course, if we're missing anything or you have a game you'd like us to check out, you're always welcome to email us at games@WIRED.com. And follow us on Twitch to get notified when we go live over there. It's been a bit, but I promise we're working on how to return in a way that makes sense (and doesn't stress any of us out, you know?). See you there soon, and see you back here next week. |
