Men who have sex with men should "for the moment" reduce partners and reconsider sleeping with new people in order to try to halt the global spread of monkeypox, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Wednesday. At a press conference in Geneva, Ghebreyesus said that while anyone can get monkeypox, 98% of the more than 18,000 recent monkeypox cases reported to the agency had been among men who sleep with other men. He urged members of this community to take steps to protect themselves amid the public health emergency. Monkeypox cases have spread to 78 countries, per the WHO, but only five deaths have been reported. The company that manufactures the Jynneos vaccine, the monkeypox vaccine most commonly distributed in the US, says it requires two doses for complete protection, but cities like New York, San Francisco, and Washington, DC, are adopting a one-dose strategy for now to try to get as many shots in arms as possible while vaccine supply remains limited.

STAYING ON TOP OF THIS Brittney Griner's Moscow trial |

- Brittney Griner testified that she was not given proper translation services when Russian authorities took her into custody. The WNBA athlete said she sat through hours of court proceedings that she did not understand. She also said she was neither informed of her rights nor given access to a lawyer when customs officials took her into custody.
- Griner pleaded guilty to drug charges in early July — a move that could grant her a more lenient sentence — but contended that there was no criminal intent on her part. In court on Wednesday, Griner added that she takes cannabis oil prescribed by her doctor to help with pain from injuries she's sustained playing basketball over the years.

The head of Instagram said the unpopular changes to the app are "not yet good." But unfortunately, we're all too thirsty to leave. "Instagram taps into a core narcissism that has become too socially acceptable," writes Steffi Cao. "We care too much to quit." A judge ruled that Britney Spears won't be forced to provide testimony about the allegations of misconduct she's lodged against her dad and the rest of her family. The ruling came as the court works through several issues that have been languishing on its docket since Spears's conservatorship was terminated in November 2021, including unresolved questions over how her money was spent by her guardians. 17 books from independent publishers you need to read this summer. An artfully imagined sci-fi set in California, an unconventional encyclopedia about loss, and more stories you won't be able to put down.

"FATAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE" The man who allegedly shot and killed a woman pushing a stroller has been charged with murder |
The man who allegedly shot and killed 20-year-old Azsia Johnson while she was pushing her 3-month-old infant in a stroller in New York City has been charged with with murder in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr. said in a statement that Isaac Argro killed Johnson, the mother of their child, "in a premeditated act of fatal domestic violence." Johnson and Argro had planned to meet up on June 29 to exchange items for their daughter. But authorities said Argro, dressed in black with a ski mask over his face, shot Johnson in the head and then fled the scene, discarding the clothes he was wearing. Lisa Desort, Johnson's mother, previously told NBC New York, "The city failed my daughter because on January 1, my daughter called me and said she was being abused while she was six months pregnant. She was scared to call the police so she gave me the address. I called police."

Elvis star Austin Butler revealed that he was heckled and humiliated by Baz Luhrmann in the recording studio and "went home in tears." None other than Leonardo DiCaprio warned Austin about working with Baz after he landed the role of Elvis Presley. Shawn Mendes has canceled the rest of his world tour because of his mental health. Mendes wrote on Instagram that after talking to his team and health professionals, he decided he needed to take time to "ground" himself and then he could "come back stronger." Drake defended his private jet's 14-minute flights after a viral report listed him as one of the worst celebrity culprits of CO2 emission. It's worth noting here that Drake's jet is also called "Air Drake."
