DAY 7 OF 7

A Skin Care Routine for the Ages

Welcome to the final day of Healthline's Glow Up Challenge. Today, we're excited to unveil the ultimate pro-aging skin care routine.

As you probably know, it's important to choose products that work with your skin type. Need help finding yours? Take our skin type quiz.

The morning routine

Step 1. A gentle cleanser

As your skin ages, it becomes more important to use gentle products that don't strip your skin's natural oils or create irritation.

Derm picks:

Step 2. A serum with vitamin C or niacinamide

For this step, try treating your skin with a powerful active ingredient. Vitamin C and niacinamide are good choices for the daytime. (Just make sure to wear sunscreen over vitamin C, to help prevent oxidation.)

Derm picks:

Step 3. Moisturize

Mature, dry, and sensitive skin may opt for an oil-based moisturizer at this step. Other skin types will probably want to use a light, hydrating product to help avoid oiliness during the day.

Derm picks:

Step 4. SPF, ideally mineral

And remember to reapply throughout the day.

Nighttime routine

Step 1. Cleanser

If you wear foundation or mineral sunscreen, you may want to double cleanse at night. Either use a noncomedogenic face oil or an oil-based cleanser. Follow that up with a water-based cleanser. Or use one of the two, depending on your skin type.

Derm picks:

*For water-based cleanser, see recs from daytime routine.

Step 2. Salicylic acid, glycolic acid, or retinol

All three of these ingredients can support healthy skin aging by exfoliating dead skin cells and stimulating cell turnover. But because they are known to be drying to skin and can cause irritation, we don't recommend layering them.

Derm picks:

Step 4. Eye cream

The skin around your eyes is especially delicate and may start to show signs of aging before other areas. While pricey, eye creams can be very beneficial for graceful aging.

Derm picks:

Step 5. Night cream

This is a crucial step for mature skin, especially if you use an exfoliating product earlier in the routine.

Derm picks:

*Skip step 2. if you opt for this night cream since it already contains retinol.

Today's challenge: Implement the above routine and stick with it. End each day by telling yourself one genuine compliment and one reason you're grateful for the opportunity to get older. Not only will your mental health benefit, but your skin will, too.

Take care,
Healthline
