The Queen’s Best Fashion Moments Through the Years

Queen Elizabeth II, Britain's longest-reigning monarch, has died at 96 years old. After helming a 70-year reign, her passing marks the end of an era, having ruled through JFK's assassination, the moon landing, Nelson Mandela's presidency, decolonization, the birth of the Internet, Brexit, and the tenures of 15 prime ministers. She ascended the throne in 1952 at just 25 years old and held her position until her death seven decades later. Only one other monarch in history has sat on the throne longer than she has.

As one of the most visible public figures in the world, the Queen knew the importance of presentation. She opted for classic skirt suits and coat dresses for her royal duties, brilliant gowns for galas, and lavish regalia for speeches in Parliament. When spotted at home or outdoors, she'd often be dressed in earthy tones with a headscarf neatly tied under her chin. Whether on international tours or on the grounds of Balmoral Castle, she knew how to dress for the occasion, and always did it appropriately.

It's no question that the Queen's fashion choices were more classic and reserved than the trendy wardrobes of the royal style icons we idolize today, such as Princess Diana, Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex. (No leg slits or biker shorts here!) But her clothing embodied the role of sovereign: traditional, unwavering, and perhaps a little old-fashioned, in a good way.

Here, we look back her best fashion moments through the years.
