It's Wednesday, gamers! That means it's time for another WIRED Games newsletter! Hooray! Before I dive in too deeply though, did you happen to check out this incredible piece in Vanity Fair about Stevie Case—aka KillCreek—the FPS icon who beat John Romero at his own game? She's a legend among shooters, and she opened up to our sibling publication about sexism in the gaming industry and in gaming communities; for the first time she's really speaking out about what she endured back then (and still does, today.) It's an amazing read, definitely check it out. Over on the home front, Will Bedingfield sat down with Xbox CEO Phil Spencer and Worlds End Studio head Michael Mann last week to chat about the 25th anniversary of the Age of Empires franchise, which is a huge landmark in its own right. They talked about how Age of Empires IV is being received a year after its launch (here's our launch review), as well as plans to bring the Age games to consoles in 2023. We even learned more about the Age of Empires II Definitive Edition that's on the way and what that would look like! If Xbox has its way, the future of Age, and the entire real-time strategy genre, is looking pretty bright. To celebrate the launch of Persona 5 Royal, Geoffrey Bunting penned this wonderful essay about how much the original Persona 5 meant to him when it came out, and how it was released around the time he fell ill with a chronic illness. His whole world changed, but Persona 5 kept him going and gave him a window into the life experiences he was missing while was bedridden. Now that Persona 5 Royal is out, he has an opportunity to look back and reconcile with how far he's come. A little while back, Lauren Goode got her hands on the latest VR headset from Facebook—I mean Meta—the Meta Pro VR. She definitely has thoughts about it, which she shared on our Gadget Lab Podcast and also in this brilliant hands-on writeup that you need to check out if you're in the market for one. Me? I'm still interested in dabbling in VR, but the price point is just too high right now, especially for the premium headsets. Maybe I'll wait and buy one used or something. What do you think? Let me know at games@WIRED.com. Next up, apropos of nothing at all really, we've updated our guide on how to use Discord. If you're already a user, great—you may find some tips and tricks in here, but if you're not a user, here's how to get started, find servers that match your interests, and navigate using the app and jumping into some of the communities you might find. You can even make your own server, if you see fit. If you want a little more screen real estate—or you're looking for better framefrates (and who isn't, truly)—Simon Hill just took Alienware's new gaming monitor for a spin, and boy did he love it. It earned a 9/10 from us, which is remarkably high praise from our Gadget Lab. The Alienware AW3423DW is a 34-inch ultrawide display (a lot like the LG I'm using to write this) and comes in at $1300, which is definitely pricey, but in line with monitors with similar specs. Maybe another one to add to your holiday wishlist? Finally, Stadia fans, did you get your money back yet? I know I mentioned this story a few weeks ago, but when it comes to putting money back in your pockets, I won't let up, at least until the window closes. Here's how to get your Stadia refund. Remember, you'll lose access to your library in January 2023, and you don't need to send your controller anywhere to get your money back. Good luck, and I'll see you here next week. |
