Must-have knives, gear for kitchen and camp
8 Must-Haves for Thanksgiving
Is your kitchen bristling with the right knives this Thanksgiving? You wouldn't use a tomahawk to field-dress a deer (if you're able to do this successfully, send us pics); chances are, you probably wouldn't use a paring knife to carve a turkey, either. The knife experts at Cutco have put together the perfect list of knives and other items that everyone needs in their kitchen to pull off an excellent Thanksgiving dinner. Be sure you've got everything on this checklist and you'll be ready to go!
Contrary to popular belief, you don't need a bazillion different knives in the kitchen. Heck, if you're determined, you can get by with just a good steak knife if it's sharp and you're very careful. However, the saying, "use the right tool for the job" has a place in the kitchen just as much as in the workshop. Here, regular contributor Jim Cobb pares down to the five knives that are essential to success in the well-equipped kitchen and offers up a few specific knives you should try.
This custom knife from Burls & Steel is a winner on all counts. It's a one-of-a-kind knife that received personal attention and is configured to handle food prep exceptionally well. It looks good, but it's not a display piece. It was made to be used wherever you need to prepare a meal. "Most important for me," says Editor Steven Paul Barlow, "is that even if it's a routine day in my kitchen at home, this knife conjures images of cool nights and starry skies, of smoky campfires, sizzling meat, and gravy over potatoes. It can be a trusty companion that helps you to make great meals on memorable occasions."
The woods aren't the only place you can get injured. Sometimes slicing and dicing in the kitchen can spill more blood than a fireside camp project. The company 5.11 has two options of med pouches, the Flex Med Pouch and the Flex TacMed Pouch, available for wherever you may need first aid. Plus, Ontario Knife Company has a new line of camp kitchen knives that are worth your attention. The series consists of a chef's knife, a santoku and a bread knife. You won't balk at the price, either; each knife has an MSRP of only $12.95.
For centuries , humans have used fish oils, orally or topically, to treat a wide array of ailments, from aches and pains to rickets and gout. The popularity of this supplement has shifted over the years, as have its primary uses. But over the past couple of decades, the hype around fish oil has arguably reached an all-time high. According to National Institutes of Health statistics , in 2012, at least 18.8 million Americans used about $1.3 billion dollars worth of fish oil, making it the third most widely used supplement in the nation. (Sales reportedly flattened out at about that level around 2013.) Today, many use it because they believe it will broadly help their heart health , but others hold that fish oil can help with renal health, bone, and joint conditions, cognitive functions and mental wellness, and any number of other conditions. But is fish oil really as good for you as millions of Americans believe it is? Who should be taking it and when? We dove into the research and

Periods are normal, but kids pointing them out in their sketches is something else. Australian woman Penny Rohleder shared a photo of her son's drawing on the Facebook page of blogger Constance Hall on Jul. 25, which well, says it all. SEE ALSO: James Corden tests out gymnastics class for his son and is instantly showed up by children "I don't know whether to be proud or embarrassed that my 5 year old son knows this," Rohleder wrote. "Julian drew a family portrait. I said 'What's that red bit on me?' And he replied, real casual, 'That's your period.'" Well, at least he knows. To give further context, Rohleder revealed she had pulmonary embolism in October 2016, and was put on blood thinning treatment which makes her periods "very, very bad," she explained to the Daily Mail .
