It's that most wonderful time of the year, when everyone is still a potential winner in the Oscars race. Which is why the Academy's Governors Awards, held this past weekend in Los Angeles, seemed to be starrier than even the Oscars themselves. Guests included frontrunners and longshots alike: Cate Blanchett, Michelle Yeoh, Brendan Fraser, Colin Farrell, Angela Bassett, Jennifer Lawrence, Viola Davis, Ana de Armas, Tom Hanks, and Florence Pugh. They were all there, ostensibly, to see Diane Warren, Euzhan Palcy, Peter Weir, and Michael J. Fox receive their honorary Oscars, but it's also one of the first serious stops for those who hope to snag a little golden guy of their own come March. "Even though it's a private affair, the Governors Awards have strategic value for Oscar hopefuls," says Senior Movies Editor Joshua Rothkopf, who was in the star-studded room. "That said, it's important to remember that all movie stars begin as movie fans first. That's what the Governors Awards are really about: celebrating Hollywood history and those who make industry-changing contributions. Everyone in that room was a film fan." And so are we.
