Hot Girl Summer is over, it's time for Sleepy Girlfriend Winter. Kelsey looks at how all the girlies are very snoozy right now, and what it means when the grind turns into a couch collapse. Elon Musk messed up K-Pop history, and Ikran tried an eyeliner stamp (frankly I was influenced). Nap time, Amber. |

"You were honk-shooing last night," my husband told me on a particularly sleepy morning in October. As a delicate flower, I am not always receptive to feedback about less-than-elegant nighttime behavior. With the utmost grace, he used my native meme dialect to alert me of my snoring. Immediately considering how I could turn a new quirk into content, I started thinking about how I had noticed a lot of sleepy vibes among memes lately, saving some "honk shoo" tweets to my phone. Chalking it up to the chilly weather and the changing seasons, I didn't think much of it…until I started seeing those damn tea bears everywhere. All around me were images of the coziest being possible: a furry little cub in a blue nightgown and a floppy red hat, sinking into an armchair in front of a fire. He's the mascot for Celestial Seasonings, known as the Sleepytime tea bear. (Note: I did not know this until my friend told me the bear had been "canceled" as the founders of Celestial Seasonings were reportedly involved in some interesting New Age religious activities. Of course, the bear did nothing wrong.) I posted about sensing exhausted vibes all around me online. It resonated and not just because of the inevitable changing of seasons slowing life down. The girls are profoundly sleepy. But what did this say about society?

Days later, I saw her: My muse, the stay-at-home girlfriend. Every once in a while, a gorgeous, unemployed woman will go viral for a TikTok doing elaborate self-care routines and chores with the financial support of partners they aren't married to. Such was the case for the most recent viral stay-at-home girlfriend, Kendel Kay. Life appears so sweet and gentle for her — I bet she doesn't even snore. But she, like so many before her, was eaten alive by commenters calling her "lazy" and "lobotomized." To me, the detractors must be jealous. The stay-at-home girlfriend is perhaps, living the coziest, sleepiest lifestyle of all in the era of quiet quitting and Great Resignation thinkpieces. I want what she has, somehow, even though I'm obsessed with work. With this, I knew I had a phenomenon on my hands. Many of our memes reflect a yearning for rest, which has surpassed our obsession with work. In an attempt to name this vibe shift, I'd been gathering sleepy vibes for days and pulling keywords from all of them, smashing them together: sleepy, girl, bear, cozy, winter. I settled on "sleepytime girlfriend," a mashup of "Sleepytime tea bear" and "stay-at-home girlfriend." Do not confuse it with "sleepytime chicken." Since publishing the article, I've noticed all sorts of posts confirming my theory. We're in the midst of a sleepy revolution. My coworker Steffi Cao noticed the popularity of what she calls "fable" imagery, illustrations of frogs and other woodland creatures that look straight out of a children's book, all have a sleepy vibe as well. Strega Nona knows what's up. Now, I'm not calling for some mass hibernation or for everyone to find a partner to support them while they perfect their green juice recipe. I'm not a Marxist philosopher, nor an ironic tradwife supporter. I'm just tired, and I know you're tired too. Have some soup. You can read more about what it means to be a sleepytime girlfriend here. After wearing makeup for most of my adult life, I am fairly confident in most products, but one I have not been able to master is winged eyeliner. That line looks simple, but it has become the bane of my makeup routines to the point where most of my eyeliners have dried up from disuse (RIP). Every time I try applying it, I am wiping away my wonky line or asking a friend for help after losing an hour of my life. A lot of people online and IRL seem to do it so effortlessly, but I've not been able to perfect a flawless flick. I've tried the hack where you use scotch tape, but I didn't feel comfortable putting tape on my face just to have eyeliner. Then came along this Ariana Grande method, and I can confirm it's a lot harder than she makes it look. Then I saw TikToks of people using eyeliner stamps, and last month, on a trip to New York, I finally got my hands on the Kaja brand one. For $29, the set comes with the stamp and regular black eyeliner. The stamp is double-sided with eyeliner gel inside to make a flick for each eye. I first tested it out on the back of my hand to see how it would come out, and it seemed super sharp. I'd been kinda nervous after seeing TikToks of it not coming out well. |

Then it was eye time, and it actually worked right away. If you looked closely, you could see that the stamp didn't go precisely into the eyeliner I'd applied separately on my eyelid, but for a first attempt, it wasn't bad at all. My stamping technique improved quickly. There are three different ways that I have seen people use the stamp: One way is simple, just the stamp on its own; the second way is the stamp along with eyeliner along the lid; and the third way is to sort of drag the stamp. I'll eventually try out the third method, but until then, I'll stick with the basic stamp and eyeliner, thrilled that finally I've nailed the perfect cat eye. —Ikran

The MAMA Awards, a K-pop awards ceremony, announced Wednesday that it will no longer be incorporating votes from Twitter users to determine the Worldwide Icon of the Year and Worldwide Fan Choice winners due to "internal changes within Twitter." Last week, Elon Musk laid off almost half of all Twitter staff, which included a quarter of employees in Korea. In the statement by Mnet, the organization behind the awards show, wrote that it would be impossible to collect the votes made by fans through Twitter due to the changes. Voting will now be conducted on the Mnet website, by listening to an artist in Mnet's playlist on Spotify, and by watching a music video. Some fans, however, believe Mnet's explanation is just an excuse. Wednesday's announcement comes just off the back of accusations that the votes are rigged. Mnet didn't immediately respond to BuzzFeed News' request for comment. |
For years, fans have tweeted #MAMAVOTE along with a hashtag of the name of their favorite idol. Some people felt that Twitter voting was more transparent and less likely to be manipulated. Meanwhile, fans started collecting the voting numbers from the Mnet website and found possible irregularities. Mnet acknowledged these and said in a statement that "data identified as fraudulent voting during the monitoring process will be excluded from the final aggregation." The annual awards ceremony is considered one of the biggest nights in K-pop and includes artists from across Asia in addition to K-pop idols. The most coveted awards, referred to as "Daesang," are Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Worldwide Icon of the Year. The awards ceremony takes place Nov. 29 and 30 in Osaka, Japan. —Ikran |
