I’ve enjoyed your video series by Stephen Quiller on water media, and I have admired his use of color in his landscape paintings. I’m hoping to add some pops of bright colors as well as more creative colors into my paintings this year.

I draw "car portraits" for car owners, and the worst bug-a-boo I have is trying to match the color of the car to what I have in pencils and inks. Almost to the point where I want to melt down crayons to get a custom blend of colors . . .

When it comes to developing extraordinary color palettes, patterns and textures, I am looking into the natural world to ignite my muse. Shells, peacock feathers, insects, fish, leaves, rocks, gems and the like are being explored as sources of color inspiration for my mixed-media paintings.

A group of friends and I are joining a teacher friend for a week-long workshop designed to explore the seven color contrasts in depth. Taking each of the contrasts, we will paint small examples and learn ways to use these contrasts successfully in our work. Some of these studies will be with realistic subject matter; others will be pure nonrepresentational work. Some of us will use acrylic; others, watercolor or other variations of water media. We'll have fun together and hopefully advance our understanding of how color works in a painting.

This may sound odd, but since I do so many pieces with lots of color, I am going to try painting a piece with shades of gray (all have other colors mixed in, like pink gray, green gray, etc.) and black and white. The idea is that it will be sort of a tonal piece, yet have hints of color, a less is more approach.
