"5 unexpected changes I've noticed since coming off the pill for the first time in years"

Senior Strong Women writer Lauren was first prescribed hormonal contraception as a way of reducing pre-menstrual anxiety. For most of her adult life, she's been on the pill – barely taking a break. And then she forgot to reorder her prescription. For the past couple of months, she's been pill-free and learning what her cycle and body are like without any added progestin or oestrogen.

Apart from having far less severe pre-period jitters, Lauren says she's surprised by how much impact the pill has had on everything from sexual appetite to exercise energy. Here are just some of the key changes she's noticed over the course of her first cycle off the pill.

Evie Richards is a Red Bull athlete who specialises in mountain bike and cyclo-cross racing

I don't function in the morning without… a hot drink and breakfast inside me. The very first thing I do is open the curtains and windows to check if the sun is out and let in the fresh air, before heading to the kitchen where I'll pop on (Australian singer) Ziggy Alberts while making coffee and breakfast.

Breakfast is my favourite meal… and every day it's different. I love a slow morning, taking my time making breakfast, and my door is always open for friends to join me for pancakes and coffee before they go to work. So, banana pancakes with berries and a decaf Americano is the classic in Evie's kitchen.

I work really closely with a psychologist… during training, so we're always working on strategies to mentally prepare for a big race. I watch previous races and GoPro laps and plan out race tactics with my coach. I'll physically prepare by riding the course, doing some activation in the gym and recovering around sessions. The day of the race is clearly planned out and I have the same routine ahead of every race to remove any variables. I will always take my time to do my hair and make-up, stretch outside, put on a playlist and head to the pits. I then do my activations, drink a Red Bull and jump on the rollers. Then, I'm ready to go.

I spend most of my time riding my bike but… that changes week by week. Off the bike, I'll run and go to the gym twice a week as well as do swimming and pilates.

I'm not great at prioritising recovery… especially when I'm at home because I always like to be on the go; everyone is always telling me to just sit down. My active recovery is walking my dog; it's great for mentally switching off. I see an osteopath and have acupuncture regularly. Otherwise, the best recovery tools are basic things like cooking good food and napping.

When I'm not riding or recovering, you'll find me… playing sport. I've always loved sports, so I'm always up for joining in a game or activity – be that tennis, hiking or paddleboarding.

Sleep is a huge priority in my life… because I struggled in high school with fatigue, so I know how important rest can be. I use a sleep tracker to check the quality every night – I'm a classic athlete in that I need it to be dead silent and pitch black. I go to sleep between 10–10.30pm; I wish it was earlier but that's my natural sleep window.

My go-to wind-down routine always includes… a bath. I love spending time looking after myself, so when I have the time to have a bubble bath, light a candle, put on a hair mask, paint my nails and dry brush, I'm very happy. I also love a sound bath. I really struggle to meditate, but a sound bath helps me to switch off and relax from a busy day.

This brain-healthy walnut pasta bake is the ultimate comfort food (whatever the weather)

When you think of comfort food, your mind probably goes to warming autumnal or wintry dishes. But given how unpredictable the weather is right now, we're making the case for summer comfort. This pasta bake is less stodgy than most and is bursting with goodness.

Pasta aside, the main ingredient is the humble walnut – one of the most nutrient-dense foods available. They're rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids and minerals. A 2022 study found that eating a walnut-rich meal can reduce levels of bad cholesterol, while a single serving of the nut will get you over the recommended daily allowance of brain-boosting omega-3. Red kidney and black beans make up the fibre and protein portion of the dish, while mushrooms add a dose of vitamin D. Remember: warm, fresh pasta is delicious and filling but cold, leftover pasta boasts its own blood sugar-balancing benefits. All the more reason to make enough for leftovers.
