5 surprising habits that could be making your back pain worse, according to an osteopath

When we talk about back pain, the conversation inevitably hovers around crap working-from-home setups and a lack of strength training. But in her new book Heal Your Back, osteopath Anisha Joshi explains that back pain is linked to a whole host of everyday lifestyle habits that many of us may never have considered. For example, have you ever thought about the role your diet might play in your experience of back ache? Or considered that your mental health could affect how quickly you recover from a niggle?

Here, Joshi walks us through the most common triggers – psychological, nutritional and physiological – with the aim of proving that back pain isn't something we just need to live with. Once you know what's making it worse, a pain-free future becomes more possible.

Jamie Chadwick is a British racing driver, three-time W Series Champion and the most decorated woman in motorsports.

The first thing I do when I wake up in the morning is… head straight to the kettle. Life at the racetrack is fast-paced, so I like to start the day with a slower morning and tea in bed.

My go-to breakfast is always… scrambled eggs on sourdough toast. It gives me a great balance of carbs and protein and with all the travel I do, it's guaranteed to be on most menus!

I get into the right mind frame for racing by… trying to quieten the noise around me and focus on the task at hand. Stretching and visualisation are great for this; they help me focus on the track ahead and get my adrenaline into a good window. A double espresso before suiting up also helps for an energy boost.

To get fit for the car, I work out… in the gym and outdoors. Racing drivers get very limited time in the car outside of races so it's important to keep our fitness up, especially between events. Strength has been a big focus for me over the past two seasons as the physicality of my racing increases. I love cycling or running to boost my cardio capacity.

To recover after a big race I… try to refuel and rehydrate as quickly as possible to aid recovery. Usually that means a protein smoothie followed by a nutritious meal. Sleep is also incredibly important for performing at my best, but that can be tough when I'm travelling so much.

The three items you'll always find in my kit bag are… my wash bag, massage gun and of course, snacks! Days at the racetrack are quite long, what with on-track activities, meetings with engineers and media commitments. Being able to freshen up and grab a snack whenever I have five minutes is always welcome.

My pre-bed wind-down routine starts with… getting organised for the next day. Laying all my stuff out the night before helps to make the mornings less hectic. I also love a good book or TV series to help me switch off and always have a peppermint tea before bed.

This elevated mushrooms on toast recipe is the ultimate gut-friendly brunch

There's nothing like a slow morning to get you in the mood to cook, and this delicious recipe from Clare Coghill, chef-owner of award-winning Scottish brunch spot Café Cùil on the Isle of Skye, is a perfect plant-packed option. Chanterelle mushrooms are the stars of this dish: packed full of potassium and vitamin D (ideal for keeping your levels topped up as the evenings draw in), they're also a good source of iron, vitamin B3, manganese and fibre. And they taste even more delicious after being cooked in vegan butter and umami miso paste.

Coghill's mushrooms on toast will also leave your gut feeling great, thanks to the garlic, hazelnuts and parsley in the pesto and the fermented goodness of the sourdough. "This is one of our most popular vegan recipes, simply because it's so full of flavour, really seasonal and filling – perfect for autumn," says the chef. "If you don't have access to chanterelle mushrooms, you can always use chestnut or diced button mushrooms instead. And if you don't want to make your own pesto, shop-bought works well too."
