The Struggle Over America's Most Essential Resource
By Sam Jacobs
Editor in Chief

We at TIME have a rich tradition of immersive photography, supporting journalists and artists who observe and report deeply.

We recently published the work of Elliot Ross, who traveled the Colorado River to show the inequities of who gets access to water in America, and how much they pay for it. Earlier this year we published work from Rebecca Kiger, who spent more than a year in East Palestine, Ohio, documenting life in the Midwestern town as it recovered from a train wreck involving toxic chemicals. Both projects were supported by funding from the Center of Contemporary Documentation.

Ross’s work is awesome both in its scale and its intimacy. The photographs and the accompanying essay tell the story of not just where the American West is today, but where much of the world may be headed as we continue to confront rising temperatures
