PECAN PIE MARTINI 2 parts crème de cacao 1 part bourbon 1/2 part Irish cream For glass rim Caramel sauce Chopped pecans 1. Dip the rim of your glasses in caramel, then coat in chopped pecans. 2. Pour crème de cacao, Irish cream and bourbon into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake until cold, 10 to 20 seconds. 3. Carefully pour into rimmed glasses, holding back the ice. Option to sprinkle with nutmeg, cocoa, cinnamon or your favorite holiday spice. Cheers! |

If you've ever wondered about going on a health retreat, stop wondering and book it. As the health director of Good Housekeeping, I've been to many, from a hot springs resort in Colorado to a weight-focused getaway in South Carolina, and most recently a luxe holistic spa on the Thai island of Koh Samui (where the next White Lotus season was filmed) for a program rooted in Eastern medicine. The common thread? Every decision is a happy one: Which delicious, nutrient-dense meal should I try? Stroll in nature, learn to meditate or meet a naturopath to ease neck pain and build healthy habits? Maybe just get a therapeutic massage or a facial (hey, it's a vacation!). Health retreats are slow-paced, leaving room for epiphanies real life sometimes crowds out. At Kamalaya in Thailand, I met with a former monk who helps people approach health changes. He explained that we think we "decide" to change with our head, but lasting change comes from listening to our bodies, where emotions are stored. It clicked: My body was aching because I kept pushing through situations that didn't feel right. Since then, I've paid much closer attention to its messages. When choosing a retreat, read the details and reviews. Some, like this hiking retreat in British Columbia, are structured; others are more flexible, perfect for a weekend getaway. Some are spartan and phone-free, focusing on one aspect of health, while others lean toward pampering with a side of yoga. Health retreats vary in price and are great for women traveling alone — friends are easily made because you all had the same genius idea: putting your health first! |

Checking In on Our Glutes |
A few weeks ago I shared some ideas for counteracting glute amnesia: when too much sitting causes butt muscles to weaken and "forget" how to activate. I must confess that, while I promised to work on this every day...let's just say I've "forgotten"! So today, I'm starting again with something simpler: I've set my phone alarm to go off every 45 minutes, at which point I do 20 squats. It takes about a minute — and so far, I've stuck with it (though 45 mins comes up pretty fast). Let's hear it for Day Ones! |

Periods are normal, but kids pointing them out in their sketches is something else. Australian woman Penny Rohleder shared a photo of her son's drawing on the Facebook page of blogger Constance Hall on Jul. 25, which well, says it all. For centuries , humans have used fish oils, orally or topically, to treat a wide array of ailments, from aches and pains to rickets and gout. The popularity of this supplement has shifted over the years, as have its primary uses. But over the past couple of decades, the hype around fish oil has arguably reached an all-time high. According to National Institutes of Health statistics , in 2012, at least 18.8 million Americans used about $1.3 billion dollars worth of fish oil, making it the third most widely used supplement in the nation. (Sales reportedly flattened out at about that level around 2013.) Today, many use it because they believe it will broadly help their heart health , but others hold that fish oil can help with renal health, bone, and joint conditions, cognitive functions and mental wellness, and any number of other conditions.
