One of America’s most powerful Democrats is denying he deliberately misled the American public when he touted lame-duck President Joe Biden’s mental acuity last year.
Senator Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.), the outgoing Senate Majority Leader, defended the legacy of Biden, 81, during an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press Sunday where he was confronted on past comments praising Biden’s mental capacity.
“His mental acuity is great, it’s fine, it’s as good as it’s been over the years,” Schumer said in a February 2024 press conference that NBC played back to him.
“All this right-wing propaganda that his mental acuity has declined is wrong,” he added.

Schumer’s prior comments came after special counsel Robert Hur released a report detailing Biden’s memory struggles that were apparent during his investigation into whether Biden mishandled classified documents. Hur conducted a two-day long interview with Biden for the investigation and ultimately declined to pursue criminal charges, with Biden’s mental decline a big reason why.
Meet the Press host Kristen Welker proceeded to ask Schumer point-blank if he and other Democrats have a response to Americans who might believe party leaders misled them.
“Look, we didn’t,” Schumer replied. “Let’s look at President Biden, he’s had an an amazing record, the legislation we passed, one of the most significant groups of legislation since…Lyndon Johnson’s great society.”
Schumer went on to praise Biden’s record 235 judicial appointments and his patriotism for stepping aside from the presidential race on his own accord.
Welker followed up with a question on whether Schumer believes Biden could have served another four years if he had stayed in the race and won this past November.
“I’m not going to speculate. As I said, I think his record is a stellar one and he’ll go down in history as a really outstanding president,” Schumer responded.
Biden dropped out of the presidential race in July after a weeks-long revolt from Democrats following his disastrous debate performance in late June. The public calls for Biden to step aside were paired with a flurry of leaks to various news organizations about his mental performance during his presidency.
Biden’s apparent mental decline was visible throughout the presidential debate as he stumbled over his words and provided incoherent answers to questions from CNN moderators. The debate immediately sent shockwaves through the Democratic party and prompted a slew of polls showing Biden trailing rival candidate, once-and-future president Donald Trump.
Before the debate, many opinion polls found the American public believed Biden was too old to serve another term.
Once Biden dropped out, Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic nominee against Trump with Biden’s backing. Trump trounced Harris in November to win a second presidential term, capturing all the swing-states and sending Democrats back to the drawing board.
