Congress convened in a joint session Monday afternoon to certify President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance’s resounding electoral victory this past November.
Trump decisively won the presidential election against his Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, who presided over the electoral vote count in line with her Constitutional responsibilities.
Trump and Vance defeated Harris and Minnesota governor Tim Walz (D) in every contentious swing state, including even states where Democrats won Senate seats. With 270 electoral votes needed to win, the winning Republican ticket captured 312 votes, giving them a decisive political mandate.
The electoral vote count took on new meaning four years to the day after Trump falsely claimed the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him, prompting a mob of his supporters to violently riot inside the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to overturn President Joe Biden’s victory.
The certification symbolizes the peaceful transition of power between administrations essential to the American Constitutional order and the lack of protest reflects the overwhelming nature of Trump’s win, a far cry from his shocking upset over Hillary Clinton in 2016.
In the wake of Clinton’s defeat, many Democrats falsely suggested it was the product of collusion with the Russian government, claims that led to the Russiagate scandal that hobbled the first half of Trump’s prior term.
This time around, Trump appears triumphant after surviving multiple assassination attempts and four sets of criminal charges, including a case brought by special counsel Jack Smith in Washington, D.C. related to Trump’s actions after the 2020 presidential election.
The Justice Department has prosecuted over 1,500 defendants on federal charges tied to the Capitol riot, many of whom have entered guilty plea agreements. Trump has promised to issue pardons for the January 6 defendants when he returns to office and considers them to be political prisoners subject to unfair treatment from the Biden administration’s Justice Department.

Trump’s journey from the political wilderness after January 6, 2021 back to the White House is considered one of the greatest political comebacks in American history. Trump, who has remade the Republican Party in his image, returns with Republican majorities in the House and Senate prepared to carry out his political agenda on a range of issues.
At age 40, Vance will become one of the youngest vice presidents in American history after serving Ohio in the Senate for two years, largely thanks to Trump’s intervention in a contentious GOP primary in 2022.
