What to Watch Instead of the Inauguration
Dear Friends,The Sunday Read is usually a premium feature for paid subscribers only, but as a public service, I’m making this one free for everybody. If you have friends or family who might find this post helpful, please share it with them. And thanks, as always, for your support.Love,AndyRemember Trump’s first Inauguration? I sure don’t. I had no intention of watching that shitshow, and I’m not watching his second one, either. (Fact: if a movie sucks, the sequel will suck even harder.)I spent his first Inauguration consuming some vastly more entertaining content on YouTube. Here’s my video playlist, which I hope you’ll consider watching tomorrow. You won’t regret it!Joseph McCarthy’s Downfall (1954)On June 9, 1954, Joseph Welch, the chief counsel for the U.S. Army during the Army-McCarthy hearings, vivisected the red-baiting Sen. Joseph McCarthy (flanked by his shifty-eyed henchman, Trump’s mentor Roy Cohn). This was the beginning of the end of McCarthyism, and a reminder that evil movements that appear unstoppable aren’t.Spiro Agnew’s Resignation (1973)Vice President Spiro Agnew was a world-class kleptocrat, until he was caught accepting bribes in the form of actual envelopes of cash—in the White House basement. He steadfastly refused to apologize for his crimes, but that didn’t make his resignation any less delicious.Richard Nixon’s Resignation (1974)Nixon was elected by a historic landslide in 1972, carrying every state except Massachusetts. Less than two years later, he was forced out of office in disgrace. This clip has only improved with age.“What’s So Funny ‘Bout (Peace Love and Understanding)” (1978)The playlist ends with a fight song. The midterms are less than two years away, and Trump is clinging to the tiniest House majority in history. The work starts now.TBR Question of the Day: What video or song would you add to this playlist? Leave your comment below:Survive the Next 4 Years: Support The Borowitz Report by Subscribing Today. |
