Fishing communities in the Philippines are fighting for their future as waters rise

| Growing up outside Boston, I would spend a week on Cape Cod each summer with my family. We went to the same beach nearly every day and have been going back to that spot for decades now. Some of my best memories were made there. | So I'm glad we launched TIME's annual Oceans issue a few years ago, as a moment to take stock each summer of the state of our planet's seas and waterways. This year's project is published as global leaders prepare to gather in Nice, France for the United Nations Oceans Conference. | In the issue, Charlie Campbell and Chad de Guzman report from the Philippines, where climate change is disrupting the way of life for fishing families and millions of people who depend on the oceans. "Intensifying typhoons and dwindling catches are transforming what has always been the font of life into a source of destruction and despair," they write. Their reporting is emblematic of a global phenomenon as rising sea levels drive migration and create refugees across the world. | Also included is Simmone Shah's conversation with Sylvia Earle, the diver and pioneering explorer who turns 90 years old later this year. Plus, Jeffrey Kluger speaks with scientist Diva Amon, who studies the deep ocean; Justin Worland writes on questions facing those eager to increase deep-sea mining; and Sturla Henriksen, the U.N. Global Compact Special Advisor for Ocean and co-chair of the G20 Ocean group, explores how a new politics could be one of greatest resources for climate action. | I hope you'll read one of these stories this week.
