Breaking: Justice Department Investigates Black Lives Matter Leaders for Potential Fraud

The Justice Department is investigating leaders of the Black Lives Matter movement for potential donor fraud after the leftist group experienced a surge of donations during the 2020 George Floyd riots, a source familiar with the matter confirmed to National Review.

In recent weeks, federal investigators have issued subpoenas and executed at least one search warrant for an investigation into the Black Lives Matter Global Foundation, the BLM movement’s umbrella organization, and other leftist groups involved with the racial reckoning of 2020, the Associated Press reported.

The Trump administration’s investigation follows years of scrutiny of BLM leaders for alleged self-enrichment and misuse of donor funds. Black Lives Matter’s revenue plunged over the past several years as co-founder Patrisse Cullors enriched herself and her associates with the organization’s substantial funds.

The ongoing federal investigation has yet to lead to criminal charges. It is part of the Trump administration’s broader plan to increase scrutiny of leftist activist organizations in the wake of the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk last month. Trump officials have repeatedly vowed to crack down on leftist political violence and the patronage networks bankrolling militant progressive groups.

Black Lives Matter spearheaded a wave of protests and riots in summer 2020 that caused over $1 billion in property damage and a surge in violent crime. The nationwide demonstrations began after George Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin went viral on social media and sparked an intense backlash against alleged police misconduct.

The spike in violent crime occurred as Black Lives Matter called for cities to “defund the police,” a deeply unpopular slogan that in practical terms advocated reduced police budgets and less law enforcement activity.

The Trump administration also has deployed federal resources against leftist militants involved with protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement, especially those under the Antifa umbrella.
