 | Perkins+Will Vancouver Studio: new office in 40% less space maximizes functionality The Perkins+Will Vancouver Studio, winner of the Interior Design Award in the 2025 SABMag Canadian Green Building Awards, fulfills the goal of providing new space that embraces evolving workplace trends. The challenge was to reorganize the program in a space that was 40% smaller than the previous studio, and only a single floor rather than multiple levels. Within these constraints, the aim was to maximize functionality, promote social interaction, collaboration and creativity.  | 1620 Main St. E: Affordable housing project sets benchmark for sustainable, community-focused design By Matthew Bolen, mcCallumSather The 1620 Main St. E. project in Hamilton is an accessible six-storey affordable housing development which achieves high-performance energy efficiency through Passive House Classic principles and mass timber construction. The CityHousing Hamilton project was originally proposed as a four-storey structure but was expanded to six storeys to better meet housing demand while maintaining sustainability goals. Funding through CMHC's Rapid Housing Initiative enabled cost-effective development to meet community needs. Special constraints included balancing Passive House airtightness and mechanical system coordination with cost certainty. This challenge was addressed through a design-build approach and early contractor involvement that streamlined the construction process. Toronto and Region Conservation Authority Headquarters adopts novel energy recovery Winner of the Commercial Industrial (Large) Award in the 2025 SABMag Canadian Green Building Awards, the TRCA Headquarters by ZAS Architects + Interiors and Bucholz McEvoy Architects (Dublin) incorporates an energy recovery ventilation (ERV) system highlighted by four "water walls" in the main atrium. These water walls are glass enclosures where ventilation air is pulled down from the roof intake and distributed to ERVs. Inside each glass duct, a chain-link mesh is suspended the full height, with cascading water providing both a visual display and a role in pre-heating and humidification of the dedicated outdoor air HVAC system. Inline Fiberglass supplied the windows which are manually operated but monitored by BAS. The Tremco ExoAir impermeable air barrier mitigates air infiltration/exfiltration, vapour transmission and water penetration. The building uses the AquaTech Lochinvar Lectrus Boiler, an electric boiler available in a kW range from 15-150 for applications requiring sustainable alternatives to carbon producing fuels.
