Why These Retirees Are Living Large

Barron's Retirement

By Elizabeth O'Brien | Sunday, November 2

When it comes to retirement, timing is everything. If you retire into a raging bull market, your account balance can grow even as you spend down your assets. This market sorcery has boosted the spending of affluent retirees and helped prop up the U.S. economy, where the top 10% of earners account for about half of overall spending.

On the other hand, retiring into a bear market can drain your portfolio much faster than when the market is flat or growing. Financial advisors have a term for this: "sequence of return risk," or the idea that the overall market returns you experience in retirement matter less than the order in which those returns occur.

You can't control the market, but you can control your asset mix. Some advisors recommend lightening up on equities as you approach retirement, to mitigate possible sequence-of-return risk. You might be able to control how long you work, and postpone retirement if the markets are rocky. At a minimum, make sure you don't have all your eggs in one basket, in case that basket goes bust.
