She sang "Ave Maria" in Italian for her high school audition and performed on stage with Gladys Knight at eleven. ‘ By twenty-two, she was unstoppable. Three albums, two movies and a role in The Matrix sequels waiting for her. Critics said she was the next Whitney Houston. But before any of that, when she was just fifteen years old, she wrote a song called "Rock the Boat." Her label heard it and immediately locked it away. His master was Colonel George Reeves, a politician and the town's sheriff. Bass served him, worked for him, and lived as his property. Then in 1861, during a card game, the Colonel accused him of cheating. Bass beat him down and rode into Indian Territory alone, with slave catchers behind him and nothing ahead. He disappeared for years. Then in 1865, the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery. Bass moved to Arkansas, married Jennie, had ten children, and farmed quietly for a decade. In 1875, a federal marshal came looking for him. Judge Isaac Parker needed deputies for Indian Territory,  75,000 square miles of lawless land. He needed someone who knew the languages, knew the terrain, and wasn't afraid of what lived out there. Bass Reeves took the badge and became the first Black deputy marshal west of the Mississippi. He disguised himself as a farmer, a tramp, or an outlaw to get close to his targets. He made 3,000 arrests in 32 years and killed only 14 men, every one in self-defense.  Outlaws across the territory feared him so much they often surrendered without a fight.
