J. Edgar Hoover ran the FBI for 48 years, serving under eight presidents. No one in American history held that kind of unchecked power for that long.

And yet, with all that power and all those resources, Hoover refused to pursue one single target: the Mafia. He wouldn’t investigate them. He wouldn’t even acknowledge they existed.

The official reason was that the mob was too difficult to prosecute. But behind the scenes, a more disturbing theory took hold.
