Season's Greetings from Photoworks

Marking the end of Photoworks 25th anniversary year, we are thrilled to share with you our festive commission by Zhidong Zhang.

Zhang's practice is rooted in exploring multifaceted identities and the role of imagery in contemporary culture. For the Photoworks festive commission Chinese born Zhang created three black and white still lifes focusing on precious objects from his new home in Boston. Memorabilia that spark a comforting and even therapeutic sensation for the artist. Put in dialogue with other items that add sensitivity, like freshly picked flowers or lit candles, things associated with our homes – the place where we were forced to spend so much of our time this year. Stuck in his new adoptive country, unable to return 'home' the images also indicate a longing to escape, both physically and mentally.

To emphasise the focus on the objects, Zhang combines the traditional still life, that by definition consists predominantly of inanimate objects, with an animated moving image to capture the viewer's attention.

Looking back on a year that has shaken up daily life and introduced new measures to connect with each other, Zhang hopes that his 'images bring a shivering of hope towards the end of the year' and the new year to come.

Zhidong Zhang (b.1996) is a visual artist based in Boston. He holds a B.Sc. in Applied Mathematics from Central South University in Changsha, Hunan and an MFA in photography from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston.
