Want to improve your health and wellbeing? Take Dr Michael Mosley's 10 simple shortcuts

I don't know about you, but I've definitely developed a little pandemic podge, piling on the pounds and putting it down to lockdown lethargy.

I know I could join a local gym, or hire a fitness instructor, but these both involve an investment of time and money – and self-motivation, which I'm certainly lacking.

But I have pulled together what little motivation I have in order to listen to Dr Michael Mosley's new podcast series, Just One Thing.

Available to download from BBC Sounds, its aim is to reveal surprisingly simple things you can do to boost your health and wellbeing. Each episode covers a short, sharp intervention – from cold showers to snacking on sauerkraut – that could literally change your life.

A big claim, I know. So, we delved into the science behind the 10 habits and behaviours Mosley recommends in the series to find out how they really work.

Just don't pretend you haven't got time to read about them!

This week I'm reading...

Conversations on Love (£14.99, Viking), a collection of essays on love, life and relationships publishing 15 July.

Edited by journalist Natasha Lunn and including essays on the science of sex and the psychology of being alone, this book is a celebration of the relationships that carry us through life.

Learning a new language takes time, but how many hours will it be before you master the lingo?

Estimates range from 400 to 2,000 hours. But it really depends on who is learning and their reasons – research shows those who want to learn will pick up the language more effectively than people being told to learn.

Expert linguist Prof Natalie Braber reveals her top tips for picking up a new language.
