Welcome back to Wednesday! Which is a strange thing to say, but here we are, aren't we? It's time for another WIRED Games newsletter, and we have a lot to cover this week! There have been a bunch of major releases, and we covered nearly all of them. Ready? First, the banner release of this past week has to be Ubisoft's latest entry in the Far Cry series, Far Cry 6. The game's been met with mixed reviews around the web, but we're more interested in what it has to say and the people who made it, so Claire Sibonney went behind the scenes to find out how the game came together during the pandemic, when developers couldn't sit next to each other and work, and when the game's own stars couldn't travel for voicework or motion capture. Still, the team behind the game made it happen, and we have some great footage of how they did it. But Far Cry 6 is still a game that heavily leverages real-world settings and real-world events, and even though the writing team did a lot of work to make sure their story felt realistic and respectful, Phillip Penix-Tadsen points out there are a few things the game gets very wrong about Cuba, mostly based on our own distorted lens on the country, due to American history and global politics. Phillip would know, he's an associate professor of Spanish and Latin American studies! Speaking of behind the scenes, Joshua Khan went behind the scenes with the folks behind Kena: Bridge of Spirits, which came out earlier this month, to talk about how they managed to really create that sense of being "lost in the woods" in their game. Kena is a beautiful game with a really lovely story, and it's a contender for indie of the year in my book, but we'll see how that shakes out come game awards season. This past week also saw the release of Metroid Dread, which, according to the people I know who are playing it, is great, and a worthy entry to the franchise. Our own Will Beddingfield thought so too, although he also thought the game was held back by its boring robotic enemies. Check out his full review here. I'll probably pick it up, though, if only to have another 2D Metroid game to play. I've been waiting a long time for this! If you're looking for more things to play, and these new releases aren't really your style, check Lewis Gordon's rundown of serene city building games that are less of a frantic buildup to dominating the world map, and more of a chill, cozy, relaxing vibe you can return to again and again. Expect to see some of these titles on our Twitch channel soon! And finally, with the new OLED Switch, you may benefit from Eric Ravenscraft's guide to transferring data from one Switch to another. That is, if you're planning on picking one up. Are you? Let us know at games@wired.com, I'm curious how many of you are planning to spring for the upgrade, save your money for the holidays or a potential "Switch Pro" if it ever appears, or how many of you are happy with your current Switch. Of course, that email address is open for more than just answering the question of the week! If you have questions for any of us here at WIRED Games, about our favorite games, what we're playing, suggestions for what we should play, or anything else, we'd love to hear from you. Don't hesitate to reach out. I'll see you all back here next week! |
