View this email online by Korva Coleman and Carol Ritchie First up Sergio Flores/AFP via Getty Images Here's what we're following today:   A federal judge in Texas temporarily blocked the state’s new law banning most abortions, calling it “an offensive deprivation of such an important right.” ➡️ It's unclear how long this ruling will hold. Texas has already filed notice that it will appeal. ➡️ Abortions might not immediately resume because many doctors fear they will be sued until the case is permanently resolved. The Nobel Prize in Literature went to Abdulrazak Gurnah, the first Black writer to win since Toni Morrison in 1993. His novels include Paradise, Desertion and By the Sea. Senate leaders are working on a deal that would avoid federal default in October by punting the political battle to December. Till now, Republicans have used the filibuster threat to block all legislation to raise federal debt limit. ➡️ This plan hinges on a proposal from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for Republicans to stand aside and allow Democrats to pass the short-term measure. ➡️ Even if this deal succeeds, a failure to lift the debt limit in December could trigger economic chaos.   Faced with losing their jobs, even the most hesitant are getting vaccinated for COVID-19. Workplaces with vaccine mandates are seeing vaccination rates of 90% or higher. Of all the sad statistics the U.S. has faced during the pandemic, this one is particularly heart-wrenching: More than 140,000 children in the U.S. have lost a parent or a grandparent caregiver to COVID-19. A growing number of people without a bachelor's degree are now out-earning those with one. A new study finds that a student's field of study or job training can boost income more than their type of degree. ➡️ But there's a problem: School districts don't have enough counselors to help students make informed decisions.
