I Can't Stand When People Assume My Husband Is the Breadwinner

On a recent trip to our local diner, my husband and I finished our meal, and I asked for the bill. When the server returned, she placed it in front of my husband. Mildly annoyed, I shifted it to my side of the booth and placed the debit card in my name on top of the bill. Upon her return, the young waitress picked it up and smiled. Several minutes later, she returned and again placed it in front of my husband. I was upset, but I tried to brush it off.

Two weeks later, the same thing happened at a different restaurant. These moments made me feel like I'd traveled back in time to the antiquated days when women relied upon men to bring home the bacon, while women were expected to fry it up. I silently fumed because, as the current primary breadwinner in our home, I can see first-hand how this sort of thinking sets women (and men) back...
