Some days are blessed to be the birthday of some particularly classic memes, and today is the anniversary of a pair of absolute bangers. Today we celebrate two of the most cursed sentences in the English language: “Shrek is Love, Shrek is Life.” We also celebrate the dawn of the oldest “Simpsons” meme in Principal Skinner’s “Pathetic” and an iconic phrase in the internet lexicon, “Delete Your Account.” Let’s get into it! | | On this day in 2013, a very, uh, creative 4chan user posted a fictional story about a 9-year-old boy praying to Shrek. Let’s skip over the details of the story right now and focus on its final line: “Shrek Is Love, Shrek Is Life.” The infamous pair of sentences became a sanity-shaking signal to all in the know over the following decade. YouTubers parodied and reacted to it, and to this day, seeing the words “Shrek Is Love, Shrek Is Life” is enough to induce a shudder in all those who know of its true origin. Read more. | | While there are dozens of memes from “The Simpsons,” Principal Skinner’s “Pathetic” holds the honor of being the first one to air on TV. The iconic image of Principal Skinner looking down with disgust comes from the second episode of the series, aired on this date in 1990. Skinner’s disgust has since become an exploitable as memers have made many characters mimic his look of disdain. However, Skinner actually doesn’t say “pathetic” in the original episode.
