The floor is lava—or at least it could be, according to one architect’s wild proposal to make building materials out of molten lava. Since 2018, Icelandic architect Arnhildur Palmadottir has been researching how to harness lava from the country’s myriad volcanoes. Dubbed Lavaforming, her project was recently exhibited in Reykjavik, where she laid out three not-so-wild ideas for how it could work. The entire concept may sound futuristic, but it’s rooted in ongoing scientific research. Plus, if humans can drill for oil 20,000 feet beneath the surface, why can’t we use the same level of ingenuity to harness another one of Earth’s natural materials? Read my story here to find out how it could work.
