| Artists & Illustrators is thrilled to be back with The British Art Prize 2022. Why don't you enter today for the chance to win some truly great prizes, have your work exhibited at a major London gallery and have your paintings featured in Britain's favourite art magazine? |
We talk to the artist who came third in last year's competition |
Steve Strode for Cardboard |
Liverpool-based artist Steve Strode entered several rather different artworks into the inaugural British Art Prize 2021 and his wider portfolio includes paintings of everything from spring flowers and autumn landscapes to fresh fruit and vintage portraits. |

His third-prize winning painting, Cardboard, was indirectly inspired by our changing behaviours during the pandemic. "Still life is great for painting from the model and exploring things like value, colour, light and edges, but you don't always have to use the usual suspects such as fruit or flowers," he says. "Like everyone else during lockdown, we seemed to order more stuff online, and I noticed how much cardboard we threw away, so I decided to put it to work in a painting. I could rip, paint, light and compose it however I pleased."
His fellow artist, the British Art Prize judge Lachlan Goudie, praised Cardboard for operating on many different levels. "It's a very simple still life concept that allows the finished painting to be both figurative and abstract, forcing the viewer to pause before deciphering exactly what you are looking at," said Lachlan.
"The palette of colours works extremely well together and there are subtle transitions and tones that can only be achieved with close and sensitive observation of the subject." |
