Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw slammed Uvalde police's response to the shooting at Robb Elementary, calling it an "abject failure and antithetical to everything we've learned over the last two decades since the Columbine massacre." During the Tuesday hearing in the state Senate, McCraw gave the most detailed timeline of the shooting yet: - According to McCraw, police had the resources to "isolate, distract, and neutralize" the shooter within three minutes of him entering the school — they simply chose to prioritize their own safety instead. Police waited over an hour before confronting the shooter, and have previously evaded questions about why they hesitated.
- Officers claimed they did not take immediate action because they believed everyone in the classroom was already dead, despite the fact that some children were still calling 911 begging for help.
- In trying to explain their slowness to act, police have previously claimed the classroom doors were locked and they had to wait for a key. But the doors were never actually locked; in fact, the classroom doors could not lock from the inside at all, McCraw said.
The May 24 shooting at Robb Elementary was one of the deadliest school shootings in history, leaving two teachers and 19 students — most of whom were fourth-graders — dead, just days before summer vacation would have started. |

| STAYING ON TOP OF THIS Ukrainian resistance in Sievierdonetsk |
- At least 15 people have been killed and 16 wounded by Russian missiles in Kharkiv, Reuters reports. "Russian forces are now hitting the city of Kharkiv in the same way that they previously were hitting Mariupol, with the aim of terrorizing the population," said Ukrainian presidential adviser Oleksiy Arestovych.
- Meanwhile, Ukrainian resistance continues in Sievierodonetsk. Russia's goal of capturing the eastern city has stalled for two months now, though Ukrainian officials say their troops have taken heavy losses, according to CNN.

Elon Musk's daughter has filed court documents to change her name because she doesn't want to be related to him "in any way, shape or form." The billionaire's daughter is transgender, and in 2020 Elon was called out for "mocking pronouns" on Twitter. A jury found Bill Cosby sexually abused a 16-year-old girl at the Playboy Mansion in 1975. It's the first civil case to go to trial since the disgraced comedian's criminal rape conviction was overturned last year. A Georgia elections worker and her mom described how Trump's lies about voter fraud tore their lives apart. In emotional testimony, the pair shared how they have faced countless death threats, vile and racist comments, and harassment that made them afraid to leave their homes and even introduce themselves by their names.

SHANGHAI AFTER LOCKDOWN How did Shanghai residents speak out about China's zero-COVID policy amid government censorship? |
BuzzFeed News; Masterchinesewithpeipei / Via YouTube |
With limited access to non-government news updates and a lockdown with no end in sight, social media users in China relied on WeChat as an outlet for protest and pointing out holes in the official state coverage — whether it was a shot of a local grocery store that appeared to be a TV set, or B-roll of an official walking through a deserted compound that users argued was a rooftop. "Because there's no real obvious, reliable voice of authority, it's always felt like we get news through rumors or WeChat," Olivia, a Shanghai resident, told BuzzFeed News. Indefinitely isolated, residents shared their lockdown experiences online, including posts about quarantine enforcers roaming the streets and medical workers allegedly using physical force against citizens who broke lockdown rules WeChat felt like a more accessible platform for people to talk critically of the government measures, residents told BuzzFeed News, as the app only allows you to see posts from friends. The app is an integral part of Chinese society, with WeChat Pay being the main channel for payment at businesses across the country, as well as the central messaging platform. Shanghai abruptly lifted the quarantine period on June 1, though many social media users remain suspicious that another intense lockdown could return. Olivia said she received the news through a government message on WeChat. |
EEL MAN WITH AN EEL PLAN We asked eel pit guy our eel pit questions |
An eel named "Mentally Eel" Nick Tobler |
Nick Tobler blew up on TikTok for building a subterranean eel pit under his garage in Kentucky. After months of careful construction to ensure the conditions were perfect for housing eels, Tobler finally released 12 American eels into his pit last week, with commenters describing the event as "historic," "life-changing," and the "best day ever." Tobler, a 25-year-old aquarium store manager, has six aquariums at the moment and said that the eels are "doing great" in their new home. He's not taking care of the animals for research or preservation — he just really likes eels. "My favorite animals are oddball fish. The weirder the better," he said. "But I also love reptiles and amphibians and I regularly go on trips looking for things to take pictures of. The internet definitely can't get enough of the eels, though." |
