View in Browser          Why Fire Island Is the Clueless of the 2020s     Austenmania took television and film by storm in the '90s with a slew of Regency-set adaptations that left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape. Colin Firth's wet shirt is one defining image; Cher Horowitz's yellow plaid skirt is another. More than 25 years after the release of Clueless, Amy Heckerling's 1996 adaptation of Emma is still the benchmark for transporting a revered classic novel to a contemporary setting. Now, Joel Kim Booster's Fire Island proves Austen is still on point more than 200 years after being first published. "As much as this movie is an homage to Jane Austen, it's an homage to Amy Heckerling," Booster tells Town & Country over Zoom when Clueless is mentioned. The writer and star who plays protagonist Noah conceived of Fire Island on his first trip to the LGBTQ+ summer haven nearly a decade ago when he took a tattered paperback copy of Pride and Prejudice as his beach read. "That first trip to Fire Island was the genesis of everything," says Booster about the spark that eventually became the rom-com now available to stream on Hulu. "It started as a joke idea. I was like, 'Wouldn't it be funny if I wrote a gay Pride and Prejudice set on Fire Island?'" he adds. "The more I allowed myself to daydream and think about it, the more I was like, 'Oh, the parallels are quite easy to find.'"
