Make a morning tea ritual |
Often we boil the kettle mindlessly, glugging down a mug of tea without a second thought. Make this time more sacred by creating your own tea ritual. Find a blend of tea that will set you up for the day – perhaps a peppy mint or a refreshing lemon verbena – and place this in its own special jar. Brew your tea in a pot and watch the changing colours of the water as the leaves unfurl and steep. Notice the aroma of your tea – can you detect the different herbs? Find a comfortable, quiet spot where you can enjoy, sip by slow sip, and take this time to set an intention for your day. |

I don't talk about weight or calories, but what I do want to know is are you looking forward to coming home to your dinner? And, after a long day is it delicious, is it satisfying, does it make you feel good while you're eating it and can I have a positive impact on the planet while I'm cooking this? I think it's important to think about your spending power. |

Our sense of smell plays an important part in our day, from the moment we wake to the moment we go to sleep at night. Master perfumier Ruth Mastenbroek shares her secrets for surrounding yourself with the very best of scents throughout the day. "Your daily ritual can start with scents of citrus or mint to awaken body and mind," says Ruth, "This could be using essential oils or a perfume. Meditate surrounded by the smell of positivity! When taking a break during the day, I enjoy smelling the balancing notes of lavender and woods, to give a sense of grounding and focus. As the day winds down a drop of chamomile oil on the pillow (or even the soles of the feet) will help you fall into a restful sleep." |

4 quick-win ingredients to boost your wellbeing |
Cinnamon As well as containing a large amount of antioxidant polyphenols that help to protect the body, cinnamon is said to reduce inflammation and lower blood pressure. Sprinkle it on top of porridge or yoghurt, or use it curries and broths. Ginger Ginger is great for aiding digestion, reducing nausea, and helping to fight flu or cold symptoms. Add it to smoothies, soups, or in a hot drink alongside lemon and honey. Turmeric Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, contains powerful anti-inflammatory properties that can help with conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's disease. Turmeric can easily be added to one-pot dishes such as curries, stews, casseroles and soups. Garlic With antiviral and antioxidant properties, garlic can help to keep those summer coughs and colds at bay. |
6 things to love about the menopause |
Many women sail through menopause without problems but, even if you who don't, there are good things to look forward to once it's over. Nutritional therapist and menopause specialist Ali Cullen highlights the following: - If you have suffered from debilitating periods, the relief of stepping off the monthly hormonal roller coaster can be immense. You no longer have to plan social events and holidays around your cycle, hoping to avoid having your period while traveling or attending a big social function with pre-menstrual bloat.
- There's no emotional up and down every month, you're on more of an even keel and know you won't be pushed and pulled about by random emotions that are nothing to do with the reality of your life.
- There's an end to monthly bloating and food cravings, which can make weight easier to control.
- Not losing iron every month means you will have extra energy, and are far less likely to become anaemic. In addition, energy is no longer needed to fuel the hormonal cycle, giving you an extra boost.
- There can be an upswing in confidence and drive after the menopause – most new business start-ups are by post-menopausal women.
- Oestrogen is a bonding hormone that attaches you to other people in what can be an excessively caring (and draining) way. Post-menopausal women sometimes find that they no longer need to be everyone else's saviour and can attend to their own needs, too, which can be extremely liberating.
