A spewfest, divorce lawyers give dating advice, and 🤩Serena Williams🤩
THE BIG STORY Britney Spears said her family plotted to put her in a conservatorship | Britney Spears arrives for a movie premiere in Hollywood on July 22, 2019. / Valerie Macon / AFP via Getty Images | | | In a now-deleted 22-minute audio recording posted to Twitter, Britney Spears says her family plotted to put her in the legal arrangement under which her dad controlled her life for nearly 14 years, claiming, "It was all basically set up. There was no drugs in my system, no alcohol, nothing — it was pure abuse." Now 40, she says she still doesn't understand what she did wrong back in 2008 when her father, Jamie Spears, first convinced a judge to create the conservatorship. In the recording, the pop star shares details about when she was allegedly forced into a mental health treatment center in 2019 and recounts how she continued to work under the arrangement, producing new music and performing almost nonstop on tours and in a two-year Vegas residency. But she was still living under her father's rules, she says, and couldn't pick nannies for her kids and wasn't allowed to have cash. She says she has been "scared of the judgment" and "skepticism" that comes with opening up but that she wants to talk about what happened to her to help others. "If you're a weird introvert oddball like me who feels alone a lot of the time and you needed to hear a story like this today so you don't feel alone, know this: My life has been far from easy, and you're not alone." | | | STAYING ON TOP OF THIS The latest from Ukraine | | | Serena Williams's daughter wore a tribute to her legacy as she began her final tennis tournament. Olympia Ohanian, 4, wore her hair in white beads, a nod to her mom's look at the 1999 US Open, and a black Nike dress that matched her mother. A company is being sued for selling location data that could allegedly be used to track people seeking abortions. The FTC said it was able to identify a mobile device that had visited a clinic in a data sample from the Idaho-based company. Bestselling author Taylor Jenkins Reid discussed her latest novel, Carrie Soto Is Back, with us. We also talked about the forthcoming adaptations of her books Daisy Jones & the Six and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Comedian Sandy Honig went on an absolute spewfest outside her insurance office because they denied treatment for her chronic vomiting condition. As is common in a country with no public healthcare system and insurance companies that notoriously DGAF about covering crucial treatment options, Honig said Anthem denied coverage of the procedure. Colin Kaepernick and his girlfriend Nessa Diab announced the birth of their first child. Could your heart just melt? Everyone is obsessed with the nonstop "Don't Worry Darling" drama. Meanwhile I'm worried about where the dang vocative comma went. Everyone is collectively "screaming crying throwing up" over Taylor Swift's new album. "SHE LOOKS ABSOLUTELY MISERABLE OH THE MUSIC IS GOING TO DEVOUR." | | | DIVORCE, BABE, DIVORCE Divorce lawyers have seen it all. Here's their dating advice. | Simon Abranowicz for BuzzFeed News | | | This week, we're bringing you It's Brutal Out Here, a series of stories about dating. The US sees an average of nearly 2,000 divorces a day. Among them: The woman who hadn't seen her husband's home before they got married and then learned he was a hoarder. The couple who froze embryos together, only for him to leave her for another woman and demand the remaining embryos be destroyed. Or the mom who believed she was a vampire and slept in a coffin every night. But enough about my nuclear family. Ask a divorce lawyer about their most memorable cases, as BuzzFeed News contributor Anna Fitzpatrick did, and you'll want to delete every dating app off your phone. Here's some dating advice we received from divorce lawyers. Not legal advice, not a guarantee of a happily ever after, but maybe a useful framework for avoiding some common conflicts down the line: Get to know your date properly. Answers to certain questions like "what's the worst job you've ever had?" can be illuminating. Are they secretive or cagey about sharing information? How do they talk about their family? These things aren't deal breakers, but they might warrant follow-up questions. Don't avoid financial discussions. Financial conflict is a leading cause of divorce for all levels of earners. If you are interested in settling down and moving in together, prepare yourself for heavy conversations, which can save you a lot of grief (and heartache) down the road. Maintain the relationship. Never make a comment in the heat of the moment, Susan Myres, who has been practicing for 40 years, suggested. It can haunt you for years, particularly in cross-examination in a divorce case.
