So hi, how are you? What a week, huh? Planning on spending some quality time with God of War Ragnarok this week, or perhaps you're diving right into Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet, whichever one you choose to pick up? We're running headlong into the end of the year, which means tons of game releases aiming to take advantage of the holiday shopping season, and even less time to actually relax and play those games. So take it from me, enjoy every shred of free time you have, okay? Oh, and of course, welcome back to the WIRED Games newsletter! First up this week, Megan Farokhmanesh sat down with Anita Sarkeesian to catch up in advance of her new series all about the intersection between pop culture and politics, called That Time When. They discuss the new series, of course, but also, it's difficult to chat with Sarkeesian (who, full disclosure, has written for WIRED in the past) without discussing Gamergate, the misogynist and racist harassment campaign leveled against her, and against a number of other people in and around games and games journalism nearly a decade ago. It laid the groundwork for the kinds of bad-faith harassment and disinformation campaigns that have come since, which is why it's so important to discuss. Eric Ravenscraft has been following the Google Stadia refund saga very closely, and there's some new information you should be aware of if you haven't requested your refund yet (or even if you have and you're wondering where it is). He's updated our guide to getting your money back, so make sure to take a look. Senior reviews editor (and amazing gamer, although she'll never admit it) Adrienne So got her hands on the Roccat Silva last week, a lapboard that lets her use her keyboard and mouse from, well, anywhere she chooses. And she says confidently that it'll solve all of your gaming problems, except maybe the skill-related ones. Check out her rave and then consider grabbing one for yourself, if you agree with her. This all sounds familiar … it reminds me of another impassioned plea from not too long ago for all of us to leave our desks and do our PC gaming on the couch. Maybe we should all take that advice and free ourselves from our desks. But speaking of shopping, Black Friday is coming soon, and if you're trying to save money and score some worthwhile deals, you'll want to read Louryn Strampe's tips to shop smart over Black Friday and Cyber Monday. After all, not every deal is a bargain, and not every product, even heavily discounted, is worth buying. But don't worry, we've got you covered. I, for one, and looking for discounts on last-gen graphics cards. How about you? Let us know at games@WIRED.com. Finally, but by no means least, I'm happy to welcome Simon Hill to the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate family, as he recently discovered and fell in love with the service, and went on to write his own rave about it last week. If you've been reading any of our other Games coverage you'll know we've been talking about the value it adds for a long time now, but if you didn't take it from us before, read this and you'll get it. Even if you're not a huge Xbox gamer and primarily a PC player, it's definitely worth your time, if for no other reason than the massive library of titles you can play anytime, whenever you want to. Back 4 Blood, anyone? I'll see you back here next week! |
